What is a troy ounce?

Precious metals such as gold and silver are usually measured in troy ounces.

One troy ounce is equal to 31.1035 grams and is slightly heavier than a standard (avoirdupois) ounce, which weighs approximately 28.35 grams.

When precious metal prices or products refer to ounces, this will usually mean troy ounces.
