The Tower Ravens – the First Coin in an Exciting New Series

Commissioned by William the Conqueror, work began on the Tower of London in 1078. Almost 1,000 years later it still stands on the banks of the Thames, an enduring statement of royal power. Walk its stone walls and echoes of the past are everywhere. Next to the Wakefield Tower you’ll encounter a living piece of history in the form of a raven staring back at you. Legend has it that if the ravens leave, the Tower will fall. Victorian invention or not, six birds reside at all times and these guardians of the realm are afforded the same status as British soldiers.

For the very first time The Royal Mint has chosen to celebrate the Tower of London on UK coinage. Created in association with Historic Royal Palaces, this release is the first in an exciting series of coins. As the most famous residents of the Tower, it’s only fitting that the ravens should feature. This brand-new, original design perfectly captures the mystery of these birds of ill omen.
