This 1809 year-dated medal celebrates the British victory at the Battle of Talavera, led by Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington. The bronze medal is in Extremely Fine condition. The obverse designed by George Mills features a bust of the Duke of Wellington, surrounded by the inscription ‘ARTHUR DUKE OF WELLINGTON’.
The reverse designed by Louis Lafitte and George Mills features a winged figure representing victory standing between the British lion and the French eagle. The British lion holds a wreath of victory in its jaws while the French eagle tries to wrest a wreath from the hand of victory.
