An original halfcrown from the reign of George III

George III’s reign was marked by a series of conflicts around the world. British colonies were lost in the American War of Independence but closer to home, wars with France concluded successfully with the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

The halfcrown was first issued in 1549 during the reign of Edward VI, and from Elizabeth I onwards, crowns were issued during every reign except for Edward VIII until their withdrawal in 1967. Despite their monarchist associations, Oliver Cromwell commissioned a halfcrown bearing his portrait when he appointed himself Lord Protector. This example is offered in ‘Fine or Better’ condition, retaining the clarity and definition of its Royal Arms design.
