This 2017 piedfort Sovereign has historical significance, a limited mintage and unique design elements, making it an attractive addition to any numismatic collection.
In 1817, the modern Sovereign came into being, featuring Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design, complete with the Garter. In 2017, we marked the bicentenary of the reintroduction of this historic coin.
The obverse features the fifth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, and is further embellished with the inscription ‘DEI • GRA • REG • FID • DEF • 2017 • ELIZABETH II’.
Notably, this was the first Sovereign for more than a century to feature the year on the obverse of the coin.
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's original 1817 design, portraying the legendary St George vanquishing the dragon with the inscription encircled by the Garter.
