Monday 17th February 2025: The Royal Mint Museum’s Short Story Competition is accepting entries from today, with presenter and broadcaster Michaela Strachan set to select this year’s winning entry.

Focusing on the topic of ‘Sustainable Futures’, the competition is open to school or home-educated children aged between 8 and 11.

Inspired by The Royal Mint’s commitment to becoming net-zero by 2050, pupils are tasked with writing 500 words, drawing inspiration from its use of renewable energy sources and precious metals recycling.

The author of the winning story will receive a voucher for £5,000 to spend on books and equipment for their school or local library. For the first time, a second prize of £2,000 library vouchers and third prize of £1,000 library vouchers, will be awarded. Specialist school supplier, Peters, have supplied this year’s prizes. The winning pupil will also win one of The Royal Mint’s coveted Annual Sets of commemorative coins and a framed copy of their story, illustrated by Bronwen James. The second and third prize winners will also be awarded a silver commemorative coin from The Royal Mint.

Dr Kevin Clancy of the Royal Mint Museum says: “We’re delighted to announce this year’s short story competition, encouraging young minds to think about a more sustainable future.

“Over the last four years, the competition has captured the imagination of children throughout the United Kingdom and we’re excited to see this year’s entries”.

The competition is open until Friday 25th April 2025, entries are welcome in any language and will be translated to English for judging.
