A Gold Coin to Mark the Moment the Guns Fell Silent

During the First World War, numerous employees of The Royal Mint lost their lives and some staff members in active service were even awarded medals made by their own colleagues. Our role then was to produce munitions for the war and keep coin production running. Now, 100 years later, we play a different role, marking the centenary of the First World War with a commemorative collection that has taken us from the outbreak of the conflict to the much-needed Armistice.

Our five-year series of remembrance comes to a close in 2018 as we look back to 1918 when the Armistice was finally signed and the guns fell silent.British sculptor Paul Day has chosen the image of a lone soldier for the last five-ounce coin in the series, reminding us of the human cost of war. The coin has been struck in five ounces of 999 fine gold, finished to Proof standard – the finest finish in minting. A donation from each coin purchased goes to Imperial War Museums, who have helped us to source the moving accounts and imagery that is included in the accompanying booklet.
