How much is a gold bullion Sovereign worth?

Gold Sovereigns are available to purchase from The Royal Mint in a variety of striking standards including proof, brilliant uncirculated and bullion. Gold Sovereigns are also available in a number of sizes including double, full and half Sovereigns. To find out how much a gold Sovereign is worth we must consider the standard of gold Sovereign, the size of the gold Sovereign and in the case of a gold bullion Sovereign, the current gold price.

To calculate a gold bullion Sovereign's value, you should multiply the gold price by the coin’s pure gold content in troy ounces. As Sovereigns are 22 carat (91.67%) gold, the pure gold content is less than the weight of the full coin. The table below should help you identify which type of Sovereign you have and how much gold it contains.

Coin Diameter Full Weight Pure Gold Content
Quintuple Sovereign 36.02mm 39.94g 1.771oz
Double Sovereign 28.40mm 15.96g 0.470oz
Full Sovereign 22.05mm 7.98g 0.235oz
Half Sovereign 19.30mm 3.99g 0.117oz
Quarter Sovereign 13.50mm 1.99g 0.059oz

If the gold price was £1,600, a full Sovereign (0.235oz) would be worth £376. 1600 x 0.235 = 376

If you are looking to sell your gold bullion Sovereign(s), The Royal Mint will offer you a price based on the live gold price on our website if the coin is stored in The Vault. If you are sending the coin to us from elsewhere, we will offer a price based on the London Bullion Market Association gold price. As The Royal Mint must check and assay all coins it buys, a fee will apply.

Other types of Sovereigns are likely to be worth more than the pure gold content – particularly if they are proof Sovereigns and produced in significant years. If you think your Sovereign meets this criteria, please speak to our Collector Services team.
