Our pre-owned Sovereign bullion coins offer you the lowest price for a secondary Sovereign bullion coin bought directly from The Royal Mint – the United Kingdom’s home of gold. The coin you receive will be randomly selected from a variety of years, enabling you to invest in gold for less. Our pre-owned Sovereign bullion coins are sold solely on the basis of their gold content rather than any numismatic or collector value. Each pre-owned Sovereign bullion coin may contain scratches, dents, or other marks.

The Sovereign is our flagship coin. Iconic, respected and reassuringly familiar, the modern Sovereign dates from 1817, when it was revived to help restore financial stability in the wake of the Napoleonic wars. The Sovereign soon became a popular trade coin, earning a reputation as the ‘chief coin of the world’ as Britain’s international standing grew.

Struck in 22 carat gold and guaranteed to five decimal places, The Sovereign is the most tightly specified coin in the world. Heralded for its beauty as well as its accuracy, Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design, created for the coin’s revival, is synonymous with The Sovereign. A triumph of numismatic art, perfected over 200 years by our skilled craftspeople, it lays claim to being the most famous coin design in the world. Instantly recognisable, it ensures The Sovereign is trusted and accepted wherever it is presented.

Each tube of pre-owned Sovereign bullion coins is assayed, authenticated and sealed by The Royal Mint.

Best Value bullion coins are randomly selected from the stock available at a single point in time. If you purchase a single tube of Best Value bullion coins, you may receive bullion coins with a mix of designs and dates or the same bullion coin multiple times.

How are bullion prices calculated?
The 'buy' and 'sell' prices shown on the website represent the market value of raw vaulted metal in an 'unallocated' form. This is the standard way prices are quoted throughout the bullion industry. In order for The Royal Mint to deliver beautifully crafted precious metals products to your address, or to our vault, a number of processes must take place, all of which incur a cost. These processes include transportation, refining, minting, quality checking and merchandising.

The price at which The Royal Mint is able to sell bullion products to consumers is therefore made up of the 'spot price' (the buy price) plus an additional premium. The premium accounts for the costs incurred in manufacturing a particular product and is usually either a percentage of the buy price or a fixed monetary amount. In short, manufactured bullion products always sell at a premium to enable retailers and manufacturers to cover their costs.
Can I spend/pay using my bullion coins?

All UK coins, whether circulating or non-circulating, are authorised as “legal tender” by Royal Proclamation, in accordance with the Coinage Act of 1971.

Legal tender allows UK coins to be accepted for payment of debts in court – but, only circulating legal tender coins are designed to be spent and traded at businesses and banks. The Royal Mint creates commemorative and bullion coin series to celebrate key moments or individuals, and these are treasured for their collectable and aesthetic value, or purchased for investment opportunities. However, these non-circulating, commemorative and bullion coins are limited edition and will not enter general circulation – meaning banks and businesses are not required to accept them.
