The standard coin of most common everyday use in England from Anglo-Saxon times right up to the modern period has been the Penny, and has existed in various shapes and forms for circa 1,400 years. In the late Medieval Period, the “long cross” silver penny was issued from 1279-1489, a period of some 210 years, through eleven reigns from King Edward I (1272-1307) until King Henry VII (1485-1509).
