Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius was a decorated military commander of the Roman Empire who, in the third century, usurped power in what became known as the Carausian revolt. The actions of the revolt lead to Carausius declaring himself emperor of Britain and northern Gaul. Fashioning himself as ‘Emperor of the North’, he held power for seven years until his assassination.
The goddess Laetitia was associated with important holidays and festivals within the Roman calendar. In this depiction she is holding a wreath which were typically worn during such festivities.
