This 1902 13-piece gold and silver "long" matt proof Set, issued for Edward VII's Coronation year, is a remarkable numismatic treasure. The set comprises four gold coins (Five Pounds, Two Pounds, Sovereign, and Half Sovereign) and nine silver coins (Crown, Halfcrown, Florin, Shilling, Sixpence, and Maundy Set), all housed in the original Royal Mint case with gold block crest and lettering.

The obverse of each coin features George William de Saulles' (1862-1903) masterful portrait of Edward VII, with his initials "DeS" below the truncation. This design is notable for its simplicity, imposing presence, and lifelike depiction of the King. The Latin legend translates to "Edward the Seventh by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India".

The reverse designs vary, with the gold coins and silver Crown showcasing Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic St George and the dragon. The other silver pieces feature distinct designs, including the Florin's striking depiction of Britannia standing on a ship's bow, symbolizing Britain's maritime heritage.

This set is particularly noteworthy for its matt finish, which was in vogue for medallions at the time and marks the only instance of a matt finish Coronation set to date. The mintage was limited to 8,066 sets, making it a scarce and sought-after collection.

De Saulles, who sadly passed away at 41 the year after these sets were issued, was a prolific engraver and designer. His work included various medals, colonial coins, and the last great seal for Queen Victoria in 1899.

This well-preserved set, practically as struck and in its original case, offers a tangible connection to the Edwardian era and represents a significant piece of British numismatic history.
