This set tells the story of The Royal Mint through its flagship coin, The Sovereign. First issued in 1489, The Sovereign is an iconic coin that remains popular with collectors around the world. The Story of The Sovereign and the Branch Mints Set includes eight Sovereigns, each struck at different locations. During the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, as the demand for gold Sovereigns surged, The Royal Mint established branch mints in Australia, Canada, India and South Africa. Bringing together a Sovereign struck at each of these overseas mints and featuring their distinctive mint marks, this presentation also includes a Sovereign struck at our former headquarters at Tower Hill in London, and a 2022 Sovereign from our current home in Llantrisant, South Wales. 

Each Sovereign in the set features a different royal effigy on its obverse, charting the monarchy from the reigns of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V and Queen Elizabeth II. The 2022 Sovereign features a reverse design by heraldic artist Timothy Noad, commissioned especially to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
