This coin collection honouring The Duke of Edinburgh features circulating coins from 1921 alongside the coin struck to mark his passing.
At the news that The Duke of Edinburgh had passed away on 9 April 2021, many people reflected on the important role he had played in the Royal Family and in public life. Born on 10 June 1921 to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, he became a significant royal figure in the United Kingdom as His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He provided steadfast support and counsel to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II over her extraordinary reign and at the time of his passing he was the longest-serving consort in British history. The obverse of each of the circulating coins from 1921, Prince Philip’s birth year, features a portrait of George V, the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Bertram Mackennal, the portrait appeared on coins throughout George V’s reign.
