This medal commemorates the coronation of George II on 22 October 1727. Struck from more than one pair of dies, this medal was the official coronation issue. The obverse of the medal features a George III laureate bust, armoured and draped, whilst its reverse displays George II seated on Edward III’s throne, holding the orb and sceptre as Britannia crowns the monarch. Specifically designed to indicate a peaceful succession, the crowning of a second Hanoverian British monarch indicated the growing solidity of the new Royal House in Britain.
