Albert Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, acceded to the British throne in 1901. On 10 March 1863, Edward married Princess Alexandra of Denmark at St George's Chapel, Windsor. With an initial coronation planned for 26 June 1902, a few days before the celebration, the king suffered appendicitis and developed peritonitis. Reluctantly, the king moved the coronation to 9 August 1902, with the ceremony proceeding as planned. This medal commemorated the coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra, with its obverse featuring conjoined busts of Edward VII and Alexandra facing right and the reverse featuring a ship with a steaming funnel of the Union-Castle Line.
