The 1784 Gold Guinea of King George III is a scarce and historically significant coin. It features the fourth laureate portrait of George III facing right on the obverse, designed by Thomas Pingo, with the inscription "GEORGIVS .III. DEI. GRATIA," which translates to "George III by the Grace of God."

The reverse displays a crowned quartered shield of arms representing England & Scotland, France, Ireland, and Hanover. The date "1784" is divided on either side of the crown, and the legend reads "M.B.FE. ET. H. REX. F.D. B.ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T ET. E." In full Latin, this translates to "Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex Fidei Defensor Brun et Lunebergensis Dux Sacri Romani Imperii Archi-Thesaurius et Elector," meaning "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire."

This example weighs 8.40 grams, is struck in 22-carat gold (91.67% purity), and has a diameter of 24 mm with a reeded edge. Graded AU58 by NGC, it exhibits light toning and minor surface marks consistent with its grade.

Mintage and Historical Context

The Gold Guinea was minted nearly every year during George III's reign between 1761 and 1799, except for interruptions due to war-related challenges in importing gold. The Guinea was a key coin in British history, originally valued at 20 shillings but later stabilized at 21 shillings.

This 1784 Guinea is highly sought after for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and scarcity among collectors of British gold coins.
