1816 George III Pattern Gold Half Sovereign

George III's 1816 Pattern Half-Sovereign is an extremely rare and historically significant coin. Designed by Thomas Wyon, it features a laureate head of George III on the obverse, with the date 1816 below and the legend "GEOR: III D: G: BRITT: REX F: D:" surrounding it. The reverse, struck en medaille, displays crowned national emblems - thistle, rose, and shamrock - with the legend "BRITANNIARUM REX FID: DEF:" beginning at the lower left.

This pattern coin weighs 3.96g and has a milled edge. It has been graded PF63 by NGC, making it the only example graded by this service. The coin shows some toning and black marks, primarily on the obverse.

The 1816 pattern was part of a short series produced for the Half-Sovereign, with variations including either crowned emblems or a shield of arms within a garter. While Wyon's design was used for silver currency, Benedetto Pistrucci's work was ultimately chosen for the gold coinage that entered circulation in 1817.

This particular specimen has an impressive provenance, having been part of several notable collections including those of Baron Philippe de Ferrari La Renotiere, Virgil M. Brand, and Captain K. J. Douglas-Morris. Its rarity and historical importance make it a highly sought-after piece for serious numismatists and collectors.

NGC Certification 2124454-046.
