The Britannia Coin
Appearing on coins in many guises since Roman times, Britannia is the embodiment of the nation in female form and an enduring symbol of strength and progress. In 1987, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson gave consent for The Royal Mint to make a new £100 gold coin, on which designer Philip Nathan’s Britannia became the modern face of bullion.
Silver Britannia coins followed in 1997 and platinum in 2007.
Upon its release, the gold Britannia coin was struck in 22 carat gold. However, The Royal Mint increased the coin’s purity to 24 carat gold in 2013; the purity of its silver Britannia coins also increased from 0.958 to 0.999 fineness. The Britannia coin is one of The Royal Mint’s flagship coins and one of our most popular bullion products. Britannia’s reputation and global recognition means these coins have a strong secondary market, making them a particularly liquid choice for many investors.
In 2021 and 2022, innovative and groundbreaking security features enhanced our Britannia bullion coins, making them the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.1 oz Gold Kangaroo Bullion Coin.
