2006 Elizabeth II 'The 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel' Portrait £2 Coin

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest engineers. Over a career spanning more than three decades, his groundbreaking ingenuity and exceptional talent revolutionized engineering, transport, and infrastructure. In 2006, the Royal Mint celebrated Brunel’s remarkable legacy with the release of two commemorative £2 coins.

The first design, created by Rod Kelly, features a portrait of Brunel alongside the iconic Royal Albert Bridge, framed by symbolic chain links. This bridge, one of Brunel’s masterpieces, spans the River Tamar and remains a testament to his innovative engineering. The second coin, designed by Robert Evans, highlights Brunel’s achievements with a dramatic depiction of Paddington Station. This station, a key terminus of the Great Western Railway where Brunel served as Chief Engineer, showcases his vision for modern rail transport with its grand iron-and-glass roof and efficient design.
