During the Napoleonic wars, the British helped the exiled King Louis of France, by striking gold francs at the Royal Mint in London to help fund his armies, as well as to supply the British troops fighting across the channel.

After the Battle of Waterloo, King Louis reclaimed his throne, as well as the Mint in Paris, so there was no requirement to ever strike French Gold coins in Britain ever again, making this coin a highly desirable one year issue.
