The 1820 Pattern Two Pounds gold coin is a rare and highly sought-after piece, with only 60 specimens struck. This coin represents a significant moment in British numismatic history, showcasing Benedetto Pistrucci's masterful design work and marking the end of George III's reign.
The concept of a gold Five Pounds and Two Pounds coin had been in development since 1816, as part of the "recoinage" initiative that reintroduced the Sovereign. However, it wasn't until 1819-1820 that these coins were physically produced.
As George III's health declined, Mint workers labored through the night to complete the gold patterns. Initially, only 25 pieces of each denomination were officially ordered. However, 60 Two Pounds coins were ultimately struck, possibly due to a miscommunication or as a "memento mori" for the King's long reign.
