The 1911 George V gold Proof Five-Pounds coin features a bare head portrait of George V facing left, designed by Australian sculptor Bertram Mackennal, whose initials "BM" are visible on the truncation. The obverse legend reads "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP:" (George V by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India).

The reverse displays the classic St George and dragon design, with the date 1911 in the exergue and "B.P." (Benedetto Pistrucci, the original designer) in the upper right of the exergue. The edge is milled, and the coin weighs 39.94 grams of 22 carat gold.

This Five-Pounds coin was part of the long gold proof sets issued to commemorate George V's coronation, with a limited mintage of 2,812 pieces. The brilliant proof finish was back in fashion by this time, showcasing Mackennal's larger portrait design on the gold Five-Pounds coin.

The specific coin described has been graded and slabbed by NGC as PF61, indicating a high-quality proof strike with some minor imperfections. It bears the NGC certification number 6684100-001 and includes a St. Helier Collection label.

Bertram Mackennal's work on this coin was part of his broader contribution to British and Commonwealth coinage. He was one of the few artists favoured by King George V and was responsible for designing the coinage and stamps bearing the monarch's likeness throughout his reign.
