1921 gold Sovereign from the Sydney Mint from the reign of George V (1910-36). The obverse features the bare head of George V facing left, with B.M. on the truncation denoting the designer Bertram Mackennal. The Latin legend reads "GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:", translating to "George the Fifth by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India".

The reverse, struck en médaille, showcases Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design of St George slaying the dragon. It features WWP under the lance, the mint letter S at the center of the ground-line indicating its Sydney origin, and the date 1921 in the exergue. B.P., Pistrucci's initials, appear to the upper right of the exergue.

Weighing 7.98 grams and struck in 22 carat gold (0.9167 fineness). It has been graded by PCGS as MS63, indicating a high state of preservation with minimal wear and strong original luster.

What makes this Sovereign particularly noteworthy is its scarcity. With a calendar year mintage of only 839,000, it is considered rare among George V Sovereigns. In fact, 1921 Sovereigns are among the more challenging dates to acquire for George V's reign, with only three Australian mints (Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth) producing them that year.

This 1921 Sydney Sovereign represents a fascinating intersection of British colonial history and numismatic artistry. Its rarity, historical significance, and high grade make it a prized addition to any serious collection of Australian or British coinage.

PCGS Certification 113429.63/40129550.
