Struck in 22 carat gold and bearing Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design, this 1980-dated coin embodies numismatic tradition. The obverse showcases the second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Designed by Arnold Machin, the portrait shows the monarch wearing a tiara, a distinct departure from the customary wreath. Notably, the tiara was a gift from her grandmother, Queen Mary. Machin's design deviated from the earlier 'couped' portraits, which were truncated at the neck and prevalent on coins issued in preceding decades. Machin drew on his coinage portrait for inspiration to create his famous stamp portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which appeared on British stamps since 1967 and became one of the most reproduced images in history.
