Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25 and became Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. The Milestone Years of Queen Elizabeth II set takes a closer look at each of the key milestones of Her Majesty’s life and 70-year reign. Each of the eight milestones are commemorated with a coin issued by The Royal Mint: the year of her birth, wedding, accession to the throne, Coronation, Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee.

1926 – A Princess is Born

The eldest daughter of George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth was born in 1926. At the time of her birth, her grandfather George V was Britain’s reigning monarch. Dated 1926, the farthing in this set dates from the same year that Queen Elizabeth II was born. The farthing is the smallest denomination of the British pre-decimal system and the farthing in this eight-coin set features a well-loved Britannia design on the reverse of the coin.

1947 – A Royal Wedding

The year 1947 saw the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh. The two were married for the 73 years until Prince Philip’s sad passing in 2021. One of the first cupro-nickel half-crowns released in Britain, the 1947 half-crown in this set is from the same year as this royal wedding. The year 1947 was also the first in which formerly silver circulating UK coins were produced in cupro-nickel.

1952 – Accession to the Throne

Whilst on a tour of Commonwealth nations, Princess Elizabeth received the sad news that her father, George VI, had passed away, which resulted in her accession to the throne at 25 years old. The 1952 threepence in this set is from the same year Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne. During the Second World War, the threepence became a popular denomination with the public as its unique, 12-sided shape made it easy to identify during blackouts.

1953 – The Coronation

A year after her accession to the throne, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place on 2 June 1953. A sixpence produced during that same year marks this historic milestone as part of this eight-coin set. The sixpence was a popular denomination and the year 1953 saw the highest number of sixpences struck since 1948.

1977 – A Silver Jubilee

Celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee took place throughout 1977 and The Royal Mint commemorated the occasion with a Silver Jubilee crown. Although designs by Bernard Sindall were considered for the coin, designs by Arnold Machin RA were eventually chosen to appear on both the obverse and the reverse of the coin. The 1977 Silver Jubilee crown has one of the largest mintage figures of a coin struck for a single event in British history.

2002 – A Golden Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2002 and nationwide celebrations took place throughout the year. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip toured the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, whilst many around the world lit beacons in commemoration of the occasion. The Royal Mint produced a commemorative £5 coin for the Golden Jubilee featuring an equestrian portrait of the monarch.

2012 – A Diamond Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II made history in 2012 by becoming only the second British monarch to celebrate 60 years on the throne, as the only previous Diamond Jubilee in British history was that of Queen Victoria in 1897. Featuring the complete shield design by Matt Dent, which features across pieces of smaller denominations produced in recent years, the 2012 UK £1 coin in this set marks this royal milestone.

2022 – A Platinum Jubilee

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee. Featuring the number ‘70’ on the reverse to denote the monarch’s 70-year reign, The Royal Mint produced a commemorative UK 50p coin to mark the occasion. Queen Elizabeth II sadly passed away in September 2022, upon which her eldest son acceded to the throne and became His Majesty King Charles III.
